According to the Brudtland Report, Sustainable Development (SD) means “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future generations to meet their own needs” (WCED, 1987). SD embodies ecological, environmental, economical and social equity. It was in 1922, at the Earth summit in Rio De Janerio, Brazil, that Agenda 21, a comprehensive blue print of the action plan for attaining SD, was released. The summit was attended by more than 180 nations, and the participants were developmental agencies, NGOs, transnational corporations, educators, and independent sector groups along with world media. It was an eye opener for corporate world which viewed environmentalism as a threat to their businesses since it required investing in greener technologies which may or may not be rewarding. SD is now viewed as a competitive advantage in not only reducing the costs and stimulating greater innovation, but also in building up good public image in the market. Innovation in using resources and minimizing waste have become the most important aspects of the overall strategies of the corporate world.
